The Only Road

How do you get to Heaven? Which roads will take you there? That question has been argued about for thousands of years. Do you know how Jesus Christ answered it? Read very carefully these words, spoken by Christ on the night before he was crucified. In John 14:1-5, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."

"A place for you." What place is Jesus talking about? A place called "Heaven", where God the Father lives. A place that's filled with beauty beyond what human beings could ever imagine. Heaven is a place of perfect peace and friendship and love. It is HOME , with a capital H! The Home that every earthly heart is longing for, whether they realize it or not. In that beautiful Home there is no fear, no sorrow, no pain, and no death. In Heaven, the troubles we've known on earth will be gone forever. This world's weary, tear-stained faces will be lit up with laughter and joy in that Home that Jesus has gone to prepare. Hearts that have been crushed by tragedies and disappointments here on earth will be filled with glad and thankful songs once they've entered that Heavenly Home.

Jesus Christ, the only perfect man who ever lived, has gone to prepare the only perfect home there will ever be -- Heaven. Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you." For YOU! Friend, He intends for you to be there with him. Why? Because Jesus Christ loves you. He proved it the very next morning after he spoke these words. He willingly gave up his life to pay for your entrance into Heaven, and for mine as well. Three days later he rose again from the dead. And he has gone to prepare that beautiful, everlasting home for you and me. But, friend, do you know how to get there? Do you know the way to Heaven?

In verses 3 through 5, Jesus continued speaking to his disciples. "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know. Thomas said unto him, Lord, we know not where you're going; and how can we know the way?"

Thomas was often a negative person. He was not quick to believe anything good. Thomas is often called "the doubter", but at least his doubts were honest doubts, not just excuses. Jesus had just finished saying, "You know where I'm going. And you know the way to get there." But Thomas interrupted Jesus and said, "Lord we really don't know where you're going. How can we know how to get there?" I'm so glad that Thomas asked that question. Thomas' question gave Jesus a chance to once and for all settle a very important issue -- the issue of how many roads lead to Heaven.

Friend, have you ever wondered why there are so many different religions and philosophies in the world? Many of them directly contradict each other and give completely opposite answers to the same questions. They cannot all be true. Anyone who says that all religions are basically alike has just not studied religion.

Friend, pretend you had lived back in Jesus' day and you had walked up to Jesus and asked him personally, "Lord Jesus, how many roads REALLY lead to Heaven? WHICH religions will get me there when I die?" How do you think Jesus would have answered you? Would he have answered you any differently than he answered Thomas? Thomas had just said, "Lord, we don't know where you are going. How can we know the way to get there?" Listen to this sobering answer given by Jesus Christ himself on the night just before his death. What Jesus said to Thomas that night he says to everyone today. Verse 6. "Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me." Let's read those words of Jesus again. He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me."

That means there is a way for us to get to Heaven when we leave this world. Thank God we do not have to perish in our guilt. We do not have to die in our sins. We do not have to face the everlasting justice and punishment that we all deserve. Thank God there is a way to Heaven. That's very good news! But there is only ONE way. It's not through our duties or ceremonies. It's not through our achievements or attainments. The way to Heaven is not through anything we can do, or be, or become. It's through another person. Jesus said, " I am the way". He said that we can only get to that Heavenly Home through Him , or not at all. How do we go through him? In verse 1, Jesus said, "You believe in God, believe also in me."

Friend, do you believe in Jesus? What does it mean to "believe" in Jesus? Do you really believe that everything Jesus said about man, about God, and about himself is true? Or do you think he was mistaken about some things, or exaggerating in other things? If you don't believe what Jesus said, you don't believe in Jesus. Do you obey Jesus? Knowing and obeying His words is an important part of believing Jesus. Do you trust Jesus? Belief is empty and useless if it doesn't lead to a relationship based on trust. Do you trust what Jesus did for you? Just what did Jesus do...?

The Bible says he came down from heaven. He lived the only perfect, sinless life that has ever been lived. He did nothing but good to anyone. He spoke nothing but truth to everyone. But we took him and nailed him to a wooden cross. We mocked him while he hung there dying. During his life he had spoken often about his coming death. He said that his death would be the complete payment for all of mankind's evils, the only payment that could satisfy the perfect, eternal justice of God. Why? Because the perfect, eternal Judge himself, Jesus Christ, was dying in our place, to pay for all our wrongs. Every wrong action, word, or thought that we've ever been guilty of was paid for in full when Jesus died. Then, with his final breath, he cried out from the cross, "It is finished!"

Do you believe it? Then let his shed blood wash away your sins. Confess your wrongs to God. Tell him all about it. Turn away from everything that you know is wrong. Leave it behind you and receive the forgiveness that Jesus died to purchase for you. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins (confess them to God), he (God) is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

No one can ever enter Heaven with the stains of unforgiven sin still on their heart. No sin, no matter how small, can ever be paid for except by the death of a perfect, sinless person -- and there's only been one. Jesus himself said, "If you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sins." (John 8:24) Friend, believe in Jesus! Obey Jesus! Trust in Jesus! Love Jesus! There is no other way to Heaven. The Bible says, "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) Friend, if you've never yet believed in Jesus, bow your head and make this your prayer:

"Lord Jesus, I don't know you, but I want to. I haven't believed in you, but I need to. Forgive me for waiting so long. I believe you are the perfect Son of God. I believe you died to pay for all my sins, and that you rose again from the dead on the third day. I believe that you're now preparing a PLACE for me in Heaven. Please prepare ME for that place! Forgive all my sins. Come into my heart. Thank you for hearing me. You are now my Savior and my Master. In Jesus' name. Amen."

If you meant that prayer with all your heart, all your sins have just been forgiven. You are ready to begin traveling THE ONLY ROADto Heaven. Pray everyday. Read your Bible everyday. Find a Bible believing church and attend there regularly. BT
